Chester

My kids love to read. And they love having books read to them. They each have their own tastes but occasionally I'm able to find a book that they both love. And it happens that I love Chester by Melanie Watt just as much as my children do.

Chester is cat that wants to be in his owner's next book. Melanie Watt is the author of Scaredy Squirrel series, but she is now trying to write a book on a mouse, but Chester has is own ideas. With his red marker, Chester helps Melanie out.

The story and the pictures are funny and endearing, and couldn't help laughing out loud along with my kids. Since getting this book we've read it several times a day, and I'm pretty sure that it will be on the keeper shelf for a very long time.

The book is the winner of the 2009 Blue Spruce Award in Ontario.

Kids' Picks

It's the third Tuesday of the month and it's time for Kids' Picks, which is hosted by 5 Minutes for Books.

This month, the Sophster is devouring the Olivia Kidney series by Ellen Potter. According to her it's her second favourite series - after Harry Potter, of course. Olivia has the ability to speak to ghosts. Which can be very funny and scary at times, so says the Sophster. Her dad is a handy man who is klumsy, which the Sophster finds hilarious. I know for listening to her giggle while she reads. I love the sound of her having so much fun reading. The books if the series are: Olivia Kidney, Oliva Kidney Stops for No One and Olivia Kidney and the Secret Beneath the City.

Master K, on the other hand has been enjoying all different types of books. Well, not all that different. He loves Spiderman, Power Rangers, Transformers and Stars Wars. So far we've read together: Luke Skywalker's Amazing Story by Simon Beecroft, Transformers: The Decepticons Invade! by Olivia London, Spiderman: Battle Against Doc Ock by Jennifer Frantz and Power Rangers: Great Adventures by Simon Beecroft.

Kids' Picks - January

It's Kids'Picks time at 5 Minutes for Books.

I'm one of those lucky people that both my kids love books. The Sophster2000, who is eight has been an avid reader ever since she discovered that she could do it on her own. She's been reading since she was four. Master K, on the other hand struggles with reading. It's hard to see the frustration growing in him while he tries to read on his own, he knows the sounds but for some reason he's having problems putting them together. But with all these struggles he still loves books, we read together, he has alone time with books on his own, and even the Sophster reads to him.

Sophster got this book at Christmas. But she was saving it until she finished the last book of the Harry Potter series. She began it a week and half ago, she just finished this morning. She loved it! She told me that I had to read it. I asked her if it was a recommendation and she said "it's not recommendation mom, I'm telling you have to read it".
Up next is J.K. Rowling's The Tales of Beedle the Bard.

Master K, on the other hand, is enjoying Marley and Me, Meet Marley. It's one of those books that he enjoys so much that he always goes back to it after reading a new book. I think in the past week, we've read it two times everyday. I asked him what he thought about the book. He said that Marley was a silly dog, and then he asked when we could get a dog. Yeah! Not any time soon.

Kids' Picks

It's the third Tuesday of the month, and it's Kids' Picks time, over at 5 Minutes for Books.

My kids are reading:

Last month S's teacher began reading the first Harry Potter as they out-loud reading in class. S enjoyed it so much, she starting reading the series on her own at home. Right now, she two thirds into the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix . I asked her what she thought of the series, and I quote: "It's the best series, ever!".

K's just starting to read. An unlike his sister he is not a fan of it. He loves being to read to, but he doesn't want to read. He says I do a better job of it. Cute! Anyway, he's been reading When I Am Big by Mary Packard, and he's actually enjoying it.

And together we've been reading The Pumpkin Book by Gail Gibbons and I Like Pumpkins by Jerry Smath.

Kids' Picks

This Tuesday marks the first of the Kids' Picks carnival over at 5 Minutes for Books. Come and join in the fun every third Tuesday of each month.

Here at the Wandeca household, we're huge fans of Robert Munsch. And this month both kids have been reading and re-reading his books. But the official favorite is Smelly Socks. They love the humor in the story but they also love spending time looking at the pictures - you never know what you missed the first time (their words, not mine).

Tina's new socks are so wonderful she vows to wear them every day.

Tina loves her brand new socks so much, she's never, ever going to take them off! But when her wonderful socks start to get smelly and she still refuses to take them off, her friends have to take action.
